Sense home energy monitor Sense listens.

Every electrical device has a unique electronic signature — its own voice. There is a noisy conversation happening inside your home as every device that’s turned on is talking. All of them. All at once.

The Sense home energy monitor listens to those voices through current sensors on the main breakers in your electric panel. It records them millions of times per second. We then apply multidomain device signature detection algorithms to distinguish one appliance from another — to recognize each individual voice.

See what’s up.
Know what’s on.

Know what’s happening in your home. See how much TV you watched, what time your kids got home, or when a basement light comes on. Sense listens to every appliance to make your home more efficient, informed, and secure.

Is this for real?

Yes! We really can detect different electrical devices in your home. Once installed, Sense will be able to find some devices in a matter of a day or two. Certain devices will take longer until we have enough data to reliably detect them. Other devices we are still developing algorithms in order to be able to detect.

Can Sense detect all devices?

Not everything. We’re able to identify many electrical devices in typical homes and continue to expand our device detection abilities. As we get data from more and more homes, the performance and coverage of our device detection will improve.

Does Sense rely on sensors?

Sense only relies on two current sensors attached to service mains in your breaker panel. Sense does not require smart appliances, device-level sensors, or sensors attached to each circuit breaker.

What are the system requirements?

The Sense energy monitor needs wifi to connect to the app. You need to have access to your home’s electric panel in order to install the Sense monitor. Sense works best in condos, townhouses, and single-family homes that have their own power meter. It does not yet work in apartment buildings unless the electrical panel is accessible from the apartment.

The Sense app is available for iOS and Android, a web-based version of the app is being developed.

Sense hardware is compatible with most residential electric panels. Homes that have three-phase electrical panels or busbar panels should consult with an electrician before purchasing Sense. The dimensions of the clamps are 3.6″ long and 2″ across (9.14cm x 5.08cm) and the width is 1.91cm. At this time, we have no alternatives for these clamps.

Does Sense work with all electric panels?

Sense works with most split-phase residential electric panels. Sense does not yet support 3-phase systems (which are typically found in commercial buildings).

Will Sense work if my house has solar panels?

Yes! Sense Solar is now available for purchase here. At the moment it is only available on iPhone, but we will launch Sense Solar for Android in October. Your solar must either feed directly into a breaker in your electrical panel, or feed somewhere close enough to your panel that the 46-inch current sensor cable will be able to reach it from the electrical panel. If you aren’t sure if your setup will work, email support@sense.com.

How much bandwidth does Sense consume?

It depends. Sense currently sends up to a few hundred megabytes of data per day to help us build models that detect devices in your house. This will not cause a problem for most users, but you may want to check to make sure this doesn’t cause you to hit a data cap with your internet service provider.

Do I need an electrician to install Sense?

Yes. The installation itself is quick and easy, but it requires opening up your electric panel and connecting current sensors to the service mains — there are live wires. You should only use a qualified electrician.
